| Greetings from India! You're reading Meanwhile, Back Home, our daily newsletter specially curated for our overseas readers. While you were asleep, it was a whirlwind of a day here in India. We've got the top highlights lined up for you. Dear reader, Not every day, an object from beyond our solar system drops by. But tonight, you can catch a glimpse of 3I/ATLAS, the third confirmed interstellar object, on a rare journey toward the Sun. First detected by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, this comet zips along at 68 kilometres per second. Thanks to the Virtual Telescope Project, you can watch it live online starting at 3:30 am IST on July 4. No telescope required, just a screen, curiosity, and perhaps a strong cup of chai. π‘Spotlight US President Donald Trump’s so-called “One Big, Beautiful Bill” is barreling toward a final vote in the House. The Bill pertains to tax cuts and spending rollbacks and stipulates a newly revised 1% tax on remittances. Therefore, it will directly hit those sending money back home. Here’s how: π Reduced Remittance Tax: The original 5% tax on remittances is now reduced to 1%, offering relief. However, money is still out of your pocket if you send funds via cash, money order, or cashier’s check. π Digital transfers in the clear If you are using a bank transfer or US-issued debit/credit card, you are in the clear. The same goes if your provider is a “qualified remittance transfer service.” π Citizenship: Whether you are a Green Card holder, on an H-1B or H-2A visa, or an international student, the Bill will affect anybody who is not a US citizen. π New year, new rule: The 1% remittance tax kicks in on transfers made after December 31, so there is time to adjust your strategy. With India receiving $129 billion in remittances last year, nearly a third from the US, even a small change can send big ripples. 500% tariff bill: India’s wait-and-watch approach When asked about US Senator Lindsey Graham’s proposed 500% tariff bill targeting nations trading with Russia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said: “We will cross that bridge when we come to it.” The bill, backed by 80+ Senators, will hit India, among countries that import Russian oil. He, however, said India’s energy security interests had been communicated. ☕ Spill the Expresso Brad Pitt’s F1: In F1, Brad Pitt channels a weathered soul in Sonny Hayes, a man racing not for trophies, but for purpose. While Pathaan saw Shah Rukh Khan cling to the past with a “bachcho pe nahi chhod sakte” stance, F1 flips the script. Here, Pitt’s old guard lets go, making space for Damson Idris’ fiery rookie. The contrast is interesting: one says “trust no one,” the other says “teach them.” Pitt’s mellow grit grounds the film, but his willingness to step aside defines it. Sometimes, the real win is knowing when to hand over the wheel. π¨ Must Read Throwback: In 1959, Jawaharlal Nehru faced a defining test of moral leadership when the Dalai Lama fled a violently repressed Tibet and sought refuge in India. Despite heavy pressure from within his Cabinet and strong warnings against antagonising China, Nehru granted asylum on “moral and humanitarian” grounds. The move would reshape India-China relations for decades. πBook Nook Grisham fans take note John Grisham, with his legal background and talent for penning suspense, has crafted some of the most gripping courtroom dramas in modern fiction.
