| Greetings from India! You're reading Meanwhile, Back Home, our daily newsletter specially curated for our overseas readers. While you were asleep, it was a whirlwind of a day here in India. We've got the top highlights lined up for you. Dear Reader, Back home, a massive cloudburst hit Dharali village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday, triggering flash floods and a massive debris slide. The sudden disaster swept away over 20 hotels and shops, and at least four people have been reported dead. Rescue teams, including the Army, SDRF, and NDRF, are on the ground, working to evacuate and aid survivors. Dharali is close to the popular tourist spot Harshil, and the area was reportedly hosting a local festival when the disaster struck. So far, about 20 people have been rescued. Authorities are still assessing the full scale of damage. The government has promised all possible support. Speaking to CNBC, Trump said India is “fuelling the war machine” and warned of a sharp rise in trade duties. Here are the key points: ๐ Tariffs set to rise Trump stated that current tariffs are at 25%, but he plans to raise them further. He did not give a specific new rate. The decision, he said, is linked to India’s trade with Russia, not just trade imbalances. ๐ Oil Trade With Russia According to Trump, India’s ongoing oil imports from Russia contribute to the continuation of the war in Ukraine. He said lower energy prices could force Russia to end the conflict. “If energy goes down another $10 a barrel, Putin will have no choice,” Trump said. ๐ India Responds India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that its oil imports are a response to market conditions. The ministry also said that some of the countries criticising India are also engaging in trade with Russia without urgent needs. ๐ No details on penalty Trump has also spoken of a separate penalty in addition to the tariff hike but has not explained how it will be applied. India has not announced any countermeasures. Trade officials in both countries are watching the next 24 hours closely. ☕ Spill the Expresso Shubman Gill’s England Test: While leading Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Shubman Gill was already prepping for England, swapping white balls for red ones in the nets, chasing perfection. As India’s youngest Test captain, he knew the challenge ahead and trained obsessively, even during the T20 season. His transformation showed: a purple patch in England with scores of 147, 269, and 161, and a near-perfect 267 at Birmingham. Gill’s calm leadership, hunger to learn (even from 15-year-olds), and obsessive attention to detail have marked his coming of age. With quiet authority and heavy runs, he’s shaping a new era for Indian cricket. ๐จ Must Read Six years after Article 370: Six years after Article 370 was scrapped, Jammu & Kashmir has seen major shifts, but not without setbacks. Political activity is back, with a new government demanding full statehood. The economy shows signs of growth: investments are pouring in, tax revenue is rising, and tourism hit record highs in 2023. Yet, the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in April shook confidence, exposing gaps in security planning. Militancy is down, but not gone. Adventure tourism is now restricted, and private investment remains cautious. J&K’s journey post-370 is complex, there has been progress, but peace and stability are still a work in progress. ๐Book Nook As I See It Reading Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine helped the columnist see loneliness not as emptiness, but as a space for healing and self-discovery. Eleanor’s quiet strength taught me that being alone is not a flaw, it is a choice. In solitude, I found clarity, calm, and the courage to connect on my own terms. That’s all for now.
