Greetings from the British Council,
Right in the middle of the festive season between Dusshera and Diwali, we witnessed the Prime Ministers of India and the UK meet in Mumbai with a record 125- strong delegation representing business, education, sports, and culture - the largest ever between our two countries. Our Diwali was even more joyful as this visit placed a strong focus on the Education Pillar of the India - UK Vision 2035. Nine UK universities, which have received approval to open International Branch Campuses in India across four cities, met the two Prime Ministers, who expressed their strong support for deepening educational collaboration. This makes UK the country with the highest number of approvals for International Branch Campuses in India. Here is a glimpse of what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the press conference.
Prime Minister Starmer also joined coaches and participants of the life-changing Premier League programme in India, where sport and education come together to create opportunities for youth at the grassroots level. UK leaders from the fields of museums, art, film, theatre, sports, and education visited Whistling Woods International in Mumbai's Film City to launch our flagship student competition Study UK: Create to Connect (more on that below). They explored collaboration in culture and education, interacted with filmmaking students, and even rubbed shoulders with a few Bollywood stars!
This year, several outstanding projects and institutions have been selected for Going Global Partnerships funding- congratulations to all the successful applicants. We have also opened a new call for top-up grants, restricted to previous recipients of the Going Global Partnerships who are in the final stages of launching joint and dual degree qualifications with their partners. If you have previously received exploratory partnership funding and need support or technical assistance in launching your degree, this call is for you.
Lastly, please join us in welcoming Shannon West, Deputy Director India, to the British Council team. Shannon is also Area Director, North India, and I am sure you will see more of him in the future - especially if you are based in North India. You may have met him at the CABS Conference in Delhi, where we partnered with the Chartered Association of Business Schools for their India Business Dialogue.
I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to meeting many of you in coming months across our events and programmes.
Rittika Chanda Parruck MBE
Director Education- India, British Council
