Hello everyone,
What an exciting few months it has been! The QS Summit in Goa in February had strong UK presence, with senior representatives engaging Indian and UK universities. British Council sessions highlighted creative industries in transnational education. Ruth McKenzie, Global Director of Arts for the British Council, spoke at the sessions and endorsed the British Council India’s joined up approach to culture and education in India. Planning has begun for collaboration at the 2027 summit, if you have any ideas, do let me know.
18 February was an exciting day when the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy inaugurated the UK Education Hub at our Delhi office. The Hub will deliver the Education priorities outlined in the India-UK Vision 2035.
Alison Barrett MBE, Director India, British Council attended the Edu Diplomatic Conclave where India announced the new target for international students – to 200K a year by 2030 from a baseline of 40K. The focus will be Southeast Asia, SSA and the GCC and the British Council are excited to engage further. Birkbeck, University of London became the tenth UK institution to receive approval to open a campus in India, marking continued growth in transnational education.
We have also been busy with UK alumni across various programmes like the Alumni UK Symposium where alumni, the ‘living bridge’ between the two countries came together to discuss public policy and creative economy and sports. We hosted our 11th Study UK Alumni Awards – always a special one celebrating the impact UK alumni have in India, and we were especially grateful to have Karnataka's Education Minister Mr MC Sudhakar attend and inspire our alumni in Bangalore.
Don’t miss the video from our first Create to Connect student competition – I was lucky to be a judge for the short films the schools submitted, and safe to say, the new generation of storytellers know their craft and are curious learners. Finally, don’t miss our research report on mobility from UK to India, and the potential this holds for the future of equitable mobility between the two countries.
We are getting ready for more outreach in schools and colleges, alumni networking events and agent briefings, opportunities for students to meet UK universities, university grant calls and more. Do stay tuned and I look forward to meeting you and engaging with you in coming months.
Rittika Chanda Parruck MBE
Director Education- India, British Council
