Webinars: Understanding your context

Join us on 17 April for two inspiring webinars designed to help you make your teaching relevant and effective in your context. The first webinar explores the professional practice ‘Understanding my context’. Our course tutors will explore how you can adapt materials and resources to suit your students' needs, interests and backgrounds. The second focuses on creating projects that celebrate local culture while fostering communication, teamwork, and creativity. These webinars are designed to boost student confidence and emphasise the importance of culture in classrooms.

Webinar: How schools retain talented and capable teachers

Join us on April 28 for a webinar led by Professor Qing Gu, where we will explore practical, evidence-based strategies that schools can use to create supportive working environments for teachers. Drawing on two decades of research, this session provides fresh insights into the importance of school organisation in retaining teachers. Discover how many teachers remain committed and passionate about making a difference in their classrooms, even while facing similar policy, structural, and practical challenges.

British Council Scholarship for English Language Teachers in India

We are excited to announce that the British Council is offering three fully funded scholarships for the MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL (Online) program at the University of Portsmouth for the 2026–27 academic year. The scholarships are designed to build pedagogical expertise, assessment literacy, and strategic capacity among teachers who are unable to undertake long-term, face-to-face study in the UK. The blended model combines online postgraduate study with a two-week fully funded residential visit to the UK.

MOOC: How to adapt resources

This free, three-module, self-access online course helps you learn how to evaluate resources, select and adapt relevant lesson plans for your context. Examine teaching aids, discuss the pros and cons of using coursebooks, and analyse supplementary materials. Develop criteria for selecting online resources and collaborate with other educators to create effective lesson plans. Recognise and explore how your students’ experience and language skills can be powerful resources in the classroom. This new course is open now – enrol until 23 June 2026.

Podcast: English Medium Instruction (EMI)

Listen to this engaging episode looking at English Medium Instruction (EMI) in South Asia and across the globe. This episode explores the factors behind the push for EMI in South Asia and worldwide, whether it is beneficial for children’s education and when and how to introduce English as a second language. Featured experts include Jeanine Treffers-Daller from the University of Reading, Ernesto Macaro from the University of Oxford, and Kathleen Heugh from the University of South Australia.

Word of the month: Dogme

Dogme is an approach to teaching that argues that teaching should focus on the student and not be driven by the resources available, including course books. This approach prioritises real-life conversations and utilises authentic materials instead of traditional textbooks. In this webinar, Cecilia Nobre explores the Dogme teaching method in English language education. Watch the session and discover how to incorporate everyday items and ideas from students to make learning more engaging and directly relevant to their lives.
